Solid shapes look different from different sides. The top view, front view and side view together describe the shape. Faces, edges and corners are also useful ways to compare solids.

Example 1 — Top view of a cube
Lakshmi looks straight down at a wooden cube. What shape does she see?
Solution: The top of a cube is a flat square, so the top view is a square.
Example 2 — Counting parts of a cube
How many faces, edges and corners does a cube have?
Solution: A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners.
