Chapter 10: The Other Side of Zero

Integers extend the number line below zero. Negative numbers represent things like below-zero temperatures or money owed. Adding a negative is the same as subtracting.

Learning outcomes

  • Place integers on a number line
  • Add and subtract positive and negative integers

Activities

  • Temperature-change number-line tasks

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Temperature drop

It is 5°C. The temperature drops by 8°C. What is the new temperature?

    Solution: 5 − 8 = −3°C.

  2. Example 2 — Add negatives

    Find (−4) + (−7).

    Solution: Both are negative, so add magnitudes: 4 + 7 = 11. Sign stays −. Answer: −11.
