Chapter 2: Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications

AI systems usually do four things: analyse data, recognise patterns, learn from experience, and make predictions or decisions. We meet AI in maps, search, photos, voice assistants and many other apps.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe how AI analyses data, recognises patterns, learns and predicts
  • Map AI applications to daily-life examples

Activities

  • Daily-life AI inventory worksheet

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — What is AI doing?

When a music app suggests a new song you might like, which AI step is it doing?

Solution: It is making a prediction based on patterns in what you (and similar users) have listened to.

  2. Example 2 — Daily-life AI
