Class 8

Chapter 4: Ethics and Responsible AI

Responsible AI follows principles such as fairness, transparency, privacy, accountability and human oversight. Anyone building or using AI should ask: who benefits, who could be harmed, and how can we keep humans in the loop?

Learning outcomes

  • Explain key ethical principles for AI use
  • Apply them to evaluate a real AI tool

Activities

  • Class debate: 'Should AI grade homework?'

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Privacy first

An app records every voice command for marketing. Is this likely to respect privacy?

Solution: No — recording personal data without clear consent and a need is a privacy concern.

  2. Example 2 — Human in the loop

Should an AI alone decide whether a student passes or fails?

Solution: No — important decisions about people should keep a human reviewer in the loop.
