Example 1 — Mental shortcut
Compute 7 × 102 quickly.
Solution: 7 × (100 + 2) = 700 + 14 = 714.
Example 2 — Algebra use
Expand 3(x + 4).
Solution: 3 × x + 3 × 4 = 3x + 12.
