The distributive property: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c. We can use it to break tricky multiplications into easier pieces.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply the distributive property
  • Use it to simplify expressions and computations

Activities

  • Mental-math distributive shortcuts

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Mental shortcut

    Compute 7 × 102 quickly.

    Solution: 7 × (100 + 2) = 700 + 14 = 714.

  2. Example 2 — Algebra use

    Expand 3(x + 4).

    Solution: 3 × x + 3 × 4 = 3x + 12.
