When we have equal groups, repeated addition can be replaced by multiplication. Tables help us list the items we need and the quantity per group.

Example 1 — Equal groups
There are 6 tables in a hall and each table has 4 plates. How many plates in all?
Solution: 6 × 4 = 24 plates.
Example 2 — Reading a list
A teacher needs 5 packets of biscuits and each packet has 8 biscuits. How many biscuits in total?
Solution: 5 × 8 = 40 biscuits.
