Chapter 11: Filling and Lifting

Capacity tells us how much liquid a container can hold. Weight tells us how heavy something is. We use a balance to compare the weights of two things.

Learning outcomes

  • Estimate and compare capacities of containers
  • Compare weights using balances

Activities

  • Capacity-ranking activity
  • Balance-the-scale puzzle

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Comparing capacities

A bottle holds 1 litre of water. A glass holds 200 millilitres. How many glasses fill the bottle?

    Solution: 1 litre = 1000 ml. 1000 ÷ 200 = 5 glasses.

  2. Example 2 — Balance scale

A balance has 3 oranges on one side and 1 mango on the other. The mango side goes down. Which is heavier?

Solution: The mango is heavier than 3 oranges put together.
