Capacity tells us how much liquid a container can hold. Weight tells us how heavy something is. We use a balance to compare the weights of two things.

Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Comparing capacities
A bottle holds 1 litre of water. A glass holds 200 millilitres. How many glasses fill the bottle?
Solution: 1 litre = 1000 ml. 1000 ÷ 200 = 5 glasses.
Example 2 — Balance scale
A balance has 3 oranges on one side and 1 mango on the other. The mango side goes down. Which is heavier?
Solution: The mango is heavier than 3 oranges put together.
