Chapter 1: Shapes Around Us

Shapes are everywhere — wheels are circles, books are rectangles, dice are cubes. We can describe shapes by counting their sides, corners, or — for 3D shapes — their faces, edges and vertices.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify 2D and 3D shapes in the environment
  • Describe shapes by their properties

Activities

  • Shape hunt around the classroom

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Naming a 3D shape

A solid has 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges and 8 corners. What is it?

Solution: A cuboid (like a brick or a matchbox).

  2. Example 2 — 2D shapes around us

Name the 2D shape that the face of a clock most often is.

    Solution: A circle.
