Chapter 1: Shapes Around Us
Shapes are everywhere — wheels are circles, books are rectangles, dice are cubes. We can describe shapes by counting their sides, corners, or — for 3D shapes — their faces, edges and vertices.
Learning outcomes
- Identify 2D and 3D shapes in the environment
- Describe shapes by their properties
Activities
- Shape hunt around the classroom
Worked examples
Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Naming a 3D shape
A solid has 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges and 8 corners. What is it?
Solution: A cuboid (like a brick or a matchbox).
Example 2 — 2D shapes around us
