We can collect data by asking questions, then organise it in a table or chart. Pictographs use pictures; bar graphs use bars. Both let us compare quickly.

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Bar graph

    Apples 6, Bananas 9, Mangoes 12. Which fruit was chosen the least?

    Solution: Apples, with only 6.

  2. Example 2 — Pictograph value

    Each ★ stands for 4 children. A row has 5 stars. How many children?

    Solution: 5 × 4 = 20 children.
