To add or subtract fractions with different denominators, first find a common denominator. Some fractions have neat decimal forms: 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75.

Example 1 — Add unlike fractions
Find 1/2 + 1/3.
Solution: Common denominator 6: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6. Sum = 5/6.
Example 2 — Fraction to decimal
Write 3/4 as a decimal.
Solution: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
