Chapter 1: We the Travellers — I

Planning a journey means deciding the route, the stops and how long each part takes. Adding distances and times needs careful arithmetic.

Learning outcomes

  • Plan routes and steps for a journey
  • Use distances and times in problem solving

Activities

  • Plan a town tour with stops and timings

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Total distance

A bus goes 25 km from town A to B, then 40 km from B to C. What is the total distance?

    Solution: 25 + 40 = 65 km.

  2. Example 2 — Trip duration

If a train leaves at 9:15 and reaches at 11:45, how long is the trip?

Solution: From 9:15 to 11:15 is 2 hours; from 11:15 to 11:45 is 30 minutes. Total: 2 hours 30 minutes.
