A map uses scale to shrink distances, directions to show which way is which, and grid references to pinpoint locations. Together they help us find places quickly.

Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Scale to real distance
On a map 1 cm = 500 m. The library is 6 cm from the school on the map. How far in real life?
Solution: 6 × 500 = 3000 m, or 3 km.
Example 2 — Combined direction
Start facing East. Take a half turn (180°). Which direction now?
Solution: West.
