Chapter 14: Maps and Locations

A map uses scale to shrink distances, directions to show which way is which, and grid references to pinpoint locations. Together they help us find places quickly.

Learning outcomes

  • Use scale, direction and grid references
  • Locate places on simple maps

Activities

  • Mark school landmarks on a grid

Worked examples

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — Scale to real distance

On a map 1 cm = 500 m. The library is 6 cm from the school on the map. How far in real life?

    Solution: 6 × 500 = 3000 m, or 3 km.

  2. Example 2 — Combined direction

Start facing East. Take a half turn (180°). Which direction now?

    Solution: West.
