Chapter 5: Far and Near
Estimating means making a sensible guess before measuring. On a map, a scale tells us how a small distance on paper stands for a real distance.
Learning outcomes
- Estimate distances around the school
- Use scaling on simple maps
Activities
- Pace-out distances and graph
Worked examples
Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Use the scale
On a map, 1 cm represents 100 m. Two points are 4 cm apart on the map. What is the real distance?
Solution: 4 × 100 = 400 m.
Example 2 — Best estimate
Which is the best estimate for the length of a school playground: 5 m, 50 m, or 5 km?
Solution: 50 m is most realistic.
Self-do practice
