Chapter 6: The Dairy Farm
Rates compare two quantities — like litres of milk per cow per day. With a rate we can scale up (more cows, more milk) or scale down (fewer cows, less milk).
Learning outcomes
- Use multiplication and division in measurement
- Reason with rates (litres per cow)
Activities
- Plan daily milk supply for a school
Worked examples
Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Total milk
A cow gives 8 litres of milk a day. How much milk do 6 cows give in a day?
Solution: 6 × 8 = 48 litres.
Example 2 — Per-cow milk
A farm collects 60 litres of milk in one day from 5 cows. How much per cow on average?
Solution: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 litres per cow.
