Chapter 7: Shapes and Patterns
Polygons are flat shapes with straight sides. Some polygons fit together with no gaps to cover a surface — that is called a tiling or tessellation.
Learning outcomes
- Identify polygons and tile patterns
- Generate patterns from a rule
Activities
- Tessellation craft with paper polygons
Worked examples
Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Polygon name
What do we call a polygon with 8 sides?
Solution: An octagon.
Example 2 — Make a pattern
If a pattern starts 1, 4, 9, 16 (squares of 1, 2, 3, 4), what comes next?
Solution: 5² = 25.
