Chapter 2: Arithmetic Expressions

When several operations are mixed, we follow the BODMAS order: Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Read through these first, then try the practice below.

  1. Example 1 — BODMAS in action

    Evaluate 8 + 2 × 5.

    Solution: Multiply first: 2 × 5 = 10. Then add: 8 + 10 = 18.

  2. Example 2 — Brackets matter

    Evaluate (8 + 2) × 5.

    Solution: Brackets first: 8 + 2 = 10. Then 10 × 5 = 50.
