Chapter 8: Weigh It, Pour It
Weight is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg). Capacity is measured in millilitres (ml) and litres (l). 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 l = 1000 ml.
Learning outcomes
- Estimate and compare weights and capacities
- Add/subtract values in standard units
Activities
- Pouring-puzzle with two jugs
Worked examples
Read through these first, then try the practice below.
Example 1 — Add weights
A bag of rice is 2 kg and a bag of dal is 500 g. What is the total weight?
Solution: 2 kg = 2000 g. Total = 2000 + 500 = 2500 g, or 2 kg 500 g.
Example 2 — Subtract capacities
A jug has 1 litre of water. 350 ml is poured out. How much is left?
Solution: 1 l = 1000 ml. 1000 − 350 = 650 ml.
